Sometimes messing up can earn you an achievement.

Generally, you earn Xbox or Steam achievements by accomplishing something. Perhaps you completed a level, got a certain amount of kills, or found a bunch of collectibles. Whatever it is, achievements are supposed to be rewards for doing something right.

However, not every achievement is like that. Plenty of developers include ones that you 'earn' by failing in some way - usually to a spectacular degree. Getting them by accident adds to the embarrassment you already feel for messing up in the first place. As such, they're ones that you claim you earned on purpose to improve your gamerscore. Here are some examples of these sorts of achievements.

2017's Prey gets off to a simple start, as you wake up in your apartment, get on a helicopter, and fly to work. Unlike the rest of the game, there is no danger around, and it's a peaceful little sequence.

Yet, things can go wrong if you decide to jump atop the copter you're supposed to ride. If you do this, the blades will hit and kill you. This earns you the No Show achievement, but it also means you died before any enemies were around.

Viscera Cleanup Detail is a satisfying cleaning game where you're tasked with making blood-covered areas spotless. So, you must mop up fluids and dispose of body parts or other mess. When you've done a sufficient job, you clock out.

If you're a lazy cleaner, you can leave before all the washing and tidying are done. But if the place is as bad or somehow worse than you found it, you will get fired, which grants you the You're Fired! achievement. In this case, the achievement isn't always worth it as the game also takes all your collectibles away when you lose your job.

Pulp Fiction fans will instantly recognize that the name of this achievement is a reference to the iconic Quentin Tarantino movie. And like in the film, this achievement is all about mistakenly harming somebody.

In the turn-based tactics game, you lead a squad of COG soldiers. As there is friendly fire, you can make one member of the team hurt another. If you hurt them so bad that you down them, you get this achievement. So, if you don't get it by accident, you have to decide whether an achievement is worth harming an ally.

In Octodad, you play as an octopus pretending to be a human father. For some reason, a suit is all it takes to hide your true identity from everyone you meet. Well, almost everyone, as there is a chef, who seems to recognize that you're an octopus. Therefore, he tries to kill you throughout the game.

In one such instance, he bursts through your garden fence and attempts to suck you into his riding lawn mower. If you aren't hanging onto the birdhouse when he arrives, you will fly into the machine. Naturally, you die because of this, but you gain an achievement in the process.

No matter how funny GlaDOS is, she is not one to be trusted during the Portal games. This is evident in the original title, so when you're escaping the Aperture Science Facility in Portal 2, it's easy to ignore her tricks.

One of her attempts involves opening up a new test for you, claiming it's the last one and you can leave after it. If you decide to do as she commands and head into the chamber, she will almost immediately start pumping toxic nerve gas into the room, and you will die. Yet, you do earn this achievement for following directions.

Surgeon Simulator proves how hard it is to be a surgeon, especially when you seemingly don't have full control over your own hands. Still, you usually get plenty of time to complete a surgery before your patient is a goner.

Yet, the time it takes for them to perish can decrease if you do anything to increase the rate of their blood loss. It's even possible to mess them up so badly that they last less than 15 seconds on your operating table. Doing so earns you this achievement and probably means you're not cut out for being a surgeon.

While robbing various establishments is what you spend most of your time doing in Payday 2, there are other activities and objectives. For instance, in the Cook Off level, you are instructed to cook some meth, which also serves as the loot for the mission.

An ally informs you of the ingredients you must use to make the stuff. So, as long as you're listening, it's pretty easy to do. If you add the wrong chemical, though, the meth lab blows up, which results in this achievement. Thus, there are positives and negatives to failing this task.

There are usually a few quick-time events during the big fights in Yakuza 0. In fact, it's among the best uses of QTEs in gaming. One of these major duels takes place inside the iconic Serena bar.

As you're playing as Majima at the time, the woman running the place (Reina) isn't a friend. And there is a QTE where she attempts to hit you with a bottle. If you miss the prompt, she smashes the glass over your head. You get an achievement for your troubles, but you also lose some health in the process.
